Something to do for Everyone! THIS SECTION UNDER CONSTRUCTION...THERE IS SO MUCH TO DO IN OUR AREA, IT'S TAKING QUITE A WHILE TO ENTER ALL THE POSSIBILITIES! Mark Twain National Forest Marble Creek Recreation Area Marble Creek Recreation Area is perhaps best known for its Marble Creek Section of the Ozark trail, an 8-mile segment that goes to Crane Lake and is open for hiking, equestrian and mountain bike use. In addition, there is fishing, swimming (own risk) and picnicking. It's about a 35 minute drive from Hummingbid Hideaway. Taum Sauk Section of the Ozark Trail The Taum Sauk section of the Ozark Trail can be accessed from within 20 minutes of Hummingbird Hideaway. It offers beautiful views, well-marked and maintained trails and two very accessible points, one at Johnsons Shutins and the ohter at Taum Sauk Mountain State Park. Mina Sauk Falls Trail Technically, this trail is part of Taum Sauk Mountain State Park, but it's nestled in the same mountains and borders the Mark Twain National Forest. This is a great trail for families since it's only 3 miles long and has a treat half-way through the loop, Mina Sauk Falls. It's Missouri's hights waterfall at 132 feet, a real treat any time of year, but especially intriguing when water flow is high, typically in the spring and late fall/early winter. Middle Fork Section of the Ozark Trail Most easily accessed from the trailhead in Oates, which is about a 25 minute drive from Hummingbird Hideaway, this is as beautiful as it gets, great for MOUNTAIN BIKING and day-hiking! Fort Davidson State Historic Site Fort Davidson is a great place for Civil War buffs, home-schoolers or ANYone wanting to learn about the beginning of the end of the essentially last confederate offensive in Missuori. Battle of Pilot Knob Re-Enactment The next battle re-enactment is scheduled for September 27 and 28, 2014. Schedule your lodging at Hummingbird Hideaway well in advance of this Commemoration of the Civil War Sesquicentennial in Missouri. That's 150 years! Elephant Rocks State Park Elephant Rocks State Park is a favorite of all who have visited this Southeast Missouri wonder. You'll find a great paved trail around the main feature, picnic tables and wonderful views from the top of the HUGE boulders that rest atop this extremely large granite outcropping. Easily accessible from Hummingbird Hideaway, about a 35 minute drive. This is a great stop any time you are staying at Hummingbird Hideaway. Many have found it to be a great stop-over either on the way to Lesterville or on the way back home if you are headed in the direction of St. Louis. Sam A. Baker State Park Trails Fire Tower Trail-2 miles Mudlick Trail-16.75 miles Shutins Trail-1.25 miles with a possible swim too! Boat Rental on Clearwater Lake Don't own a boat because it's too expensive to justify, but still like to ski or tube? Within about an hour of Hummingbird Hideaway, you'll love Bluff View Marina on Clearwater Lake, just outside Piedmont, MO. Rates are reasonable and you can be happy that you've gotten your one time boating for the year in with much less than the thousands it would cost you if you owned your own boat! Springs Information on all springs within 1 hr 15 minutes Alley Spring Grist Mill Alley Spring Grist Mill is a National Register of Historic Places destination that is open June through August, a great way to learn about how grist mills worked and how school in a one-room schoolhouse was conducted. The price is right, last time we checked it was FREE! Blue Spring Blue Spring in Eminence, MO is a bit less accessible than Big Spring in VanBuren, but just a beautiful location. Again, don't forget your camera! Big Spring Link 1 Big Spring Link 2 One of the largest springs in the world, Big Spring is about a 1 hour drive from Hummingbird Hideaway, well worth the effort to get there.
